The
Third Mission Paintball Game:
"PAINTED FATE: WAR ON TERROR"
It was a
mid-October weekend, 2004. Terror was in the air - and not the
kind from Halloween fright attractions. The latest mission paintball
game by Mission Masters, Painted Fate: War on Terror, had drawn
a crowd of seventy+ players to Three Rivers Paintball Park in
Freedom, PA. Mission Paintball is the newest game style included
in the Three Rivers Paintball Park special events lineup of
2004. Two prior mission games were held at TRP in 2004: Alien
Invasion: A Paintball Incident and Operation Hamburger Hill.
Even though each of the first two mission games was successful,
Painted Fate: War on Terror surpassed them both!
The action
began at 11:00 AM with a surprise attack on an embassy guarded
by the counter-terrorist team, Painted Fate. The Reign of Doom
terrorists succeeded in overthrowing the embassy, planting a
bomb, and taking three hostages from inside. Completing the
first set of mission objectives earned Doom a full score for
the opening segment. The surprise attack was extremely successful
because Painted Fate counter-terrorists were distracted by the
terrorist forces sweeping across the woods at a distance, while
Doom simultaneously sent out a flanking attack on the embassy
which succeeded in hitting the half-organized defense too hard
for any chance of recovery.
Painted
Fate responded late in the second mission by destroying some
supplies at the terrorist training camp and by performing a
daring flanking maneuver which eliminated all three of the terrorist
leaders. Unfortunately for Painted Fate, the Doom terrorists
managed to complete all of their objectives once again for a
perfect score. By this time, those who were new to mission paintball
games came to realize what to expect... lots of intense action
and unbridled fun!
More parties
of players arrived at the field to join in the mission paintball
experience, thus increasing the size of the teams by roughly
15%. Painted Fate prevented two out of three attempted bombings
during the third mission. Terrorists and their bomb specialists
were held at a distance by an impenetrable perimeter of defensive
fire. Only one of the terrorists' bombs was successfully planted
at its target. Another mission called for three assassinations
of a military strategist, a diplomat, and an oil company president,
however only two were successfully carried out. The military
strategist was too heavily defended by the Fate counter-terrorists.
Next it
was time for the terrorists to begin building their weapon of
mass destruction. The following series of missions centered
around the terrorist team trying to collect the materials and
technology required to build a missile! Uranium was stolen from
a nuclear research center and two of three scientists were kidnapped
for their knowledge. Since terrorists were unable to steal fatal
viruses from a medical research facility, their efforts yielded
a nuclear weapon instead.
At last,
it all came down to the final mission. The safety of the free
world was in jeopardy, and it would take a heroic effort by
Painted Fate to preserve it. The score was Painted Fate: 90,
and Reign of Doom: 110. Thirty (30) points were up for grabs
in the final mission, so the game could easily go either way.
Painted Fate had T-minus twenty minutes to stop the launch of
the weapon of mass destruction. The team who won this mission
would win the entire game! The final mission allowed Reign of
Doom terrorists to place their weapon of mass destruction anywhere
on the playing field (except inside any structure for launching
purposes). The location would be disclosed to Painted Fate just
before the mission commenced.
The missile
was placed just off a dirt roadway in a small clearing in the
center area of a playing field. Woods bordered the roadway opposite
the missile. The clearing itself was bordered by a lumpy field
of tall grasses, trenches, underbrush and many scrub trees.
Scattered thickets restricted movement in some areas, while
stacked tires provided some cover in and around the lumpy field.
The Doom terrorists hid in near tire bunkers and waited for
Painted Fate to emerge from the woods.
What seemed
like a good strategy ultimately cost Painted Fate the game:
The counter-terrorists split their team in half and attacked
the flanks of Doom. They would have easily sighted the weapon
with any forces strong enough to advance up the middle of the
field. But the battle was on, and the ensuing firefight was
truly something to behold! The non-stop gunfire sounded like
a huge popcorn maker. Everyone knew it was the final mission
and everyone was giving all they had. In the last 60 seconds
of the game, remaining Doom terrorists surrounded the missile
to ensure its wicked delivery. It was definitely an exciting
and memorable day of paintball for all!
